Singapore Malay Heritage
Centre (MHC) – Key Features Summary
Overview
The Malay Heritage Centre
is Singapore’s main heritage institution dedicated to the history,
culture, and contributions of the Malay community. It is housed in the
Istana Kampong Gelam, a National Monument (gazetted
2015) that was once the royal residence of the descendants of Sultan
Hussein Shah. Located in the historic Kampong Gelam
precinct (near Bugis), it sits at the heart of Singapore’s oldest Malay
cultural and trading quarter.
It is managed by the
National Heritage Board in partnership with the Malay Heritage
Foundation. Officially opened in June 2005 by then-PM Lee Hsien Loong,
it underwent a major restoration and revamp and reopened in April 2026.
Theme of the
refreshed centre: Dari Rantau ke Rumah (“From the
Region to Home”). It traces how diverse Malay communities from across
the Malay Archipelago (Nusantara) journeyed, settled, and evolved a
shared sense of home in Singapore.
Key Features of the Permanent Galleries
The centre features
six permanent galleries with 279 artefacts
(about a quarter loaned by the community). The displays are immersive
and interactive, moving beyond static exhibits. They highlight the
diversity of Malay sub-ethnic groups (including Javanese, Bugis,
Minangkabau, Baweanese, Banjar, and others), the evolving roles of Malay
women, and living traditions. Commissioned contemporary artworks by
local Malay artists are integrated throughout.

Other Notable Aspects
- Immersive & Interactive Elements — Multimedia
installations, interactive displays (e.g., learning traditional
scripts such as Jawi, Lontara, and Rejang), and contemporary art
that dialogue with historical artefacts.
- Community Focus — Strong emphasis on
community-contributed objects, diverse sub-ethnic voices, and the
living nature of Malay culture rather than a fixed or monolithic
identity.
- Location Advantage — Situated in vibrant
Kampong Gelam, visitors can easily explore nearby landmarks such as
Masjid Sultan, traditional shops, and Malay cuisine (including at
Gedung Kuning).
- Programmes — Guided tours (English and
Mandarin), cultural performances, workshops, and community events
that keep the centre a living space rather than just a museum.

Why It Matters for a Presentation
The MHC is not just a
museum of the past — it presents Malay heritage as dynamic, diverse, and
continually evolving. It connects regional roots (rantau) with
a shared Singaporean home, celebrates both historical depth and
contemporary creativity, and positions Kampong Gelam as a living
cultural precinct for all Singaporeans.
This structure works well
for slides: one overview slide, one on the building & location, one or
two on the gallery narrative, and a closing slide on significance +
visit information. Let me know if you’d like a suggested slide outline,
speaker notes, or more details on any section!

(Istana
Kampong Gelam)内;
